The Tao vs. The Secret

My sweetie recorded Dr. Wayne Dyer's new program and we watched it together last night. "Change your thoughts, change your life" is the title of his new book. Wayne spent one entire year reading, researching, and meditating on Lao-tzu’s messages, practicing them each day and ultimately writing down these essays. He took each message and spent 4 days per message. He claims that writing this book changed him forever and he feels the greatest sense of peace he has ever experienced.

Without having read the book, yet... I can say just from watching the program that I was very drawn to it particularly when he talked about a time close to his 65th birthday where he gave his belongings to a trusted friend and told him to give everything away. He talked about how powerful it was to release his attachments to his "stuff."

On a smaller scale, a year and a half ago I moved from a 3 bedroom house to a small one bedroom condo and either threw out or gave most of my stuff away. It felt GREAT!

I noticed how precious simplicity has become to me. This is another area where I sometimes question if there's something wrong with me!!!!! Now, at the same time, I love the idea of making as much money as Wayne Dayer makes! Which brings me to the question of "How does this work with the concepts of "The Secret"?

For example, one of the messages in the Tao is to "Think small." In other words nothing big happens from thinking big but from thinking one small step and then another step and big things happen but only from being in the moment of that one small step. Wayne gave the example of having been alcohol free for 20 years but if he knew at the time that he was going to stop drinking alcohol for 20 years, the first thing he would have done was grab a drink!

The Secret says "Think Big." That everything you desire comes from imagining it is already created on some level and it's just a matter of knowing that we are spirit and it is so.

The Tao is about being humble and flexible and letting go of our attachments. "The Secret" is about being powerful co-creators and having everything we want!

I have read "The Secret" but I haven't read the Tao. It would be interesting to spend some time with each message and see what happens. I am really curious to hear what any of you think about these two different philosophies. The common denominator seems to be that they have life changing capabilities for profound inner peace. Could there somehow be a balance between the two?

The Tao Te Ching can be found in several translations online— just Google it. One I liked was at http://www.religiousworlds.com/taoism/ttcstan3.html
The Law of Attraction as portrayed in The Secret seems (to me) to be largely about acquiring things; this is quite opposed in the TTC. I suspect one would have to stretch both books quite a bit to come to a balance point, if it is possible at all.

Thanks. I checked that out. I like that translation, too.
